CVE-2026-5223Crates in third party registries can override the cached source of other crates

Updated under an hour ago ()

Does this affect you?

It affects Rust Project Cargo and 1 other product. Add what you run to find out whether that includes you.

No exploitation reported and no EPSS estimate yet.

Cargo incorrectly handled symlinks inside of crate tarballs downloaded from third-party registries, allowing a malicious crate to override the source code of another crate from the same registry. The severity of the vulnerability is **medium** for users of third-party registries. Users of crates.io are **not affected**, as crates.io forbids uploading crates containing any symlink.

The CVE record is authoritative. Products marked “from the name” were identified from the CNA's free-text names, not a CPE, and are matched less certainly. This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.
